I had a lovely conversation with an old friend on the phone on Friday. It was good to catch up. As we chatted we slowly moved the conversation to the value of routine.
So often routines are 'sold' on the importance of providing kids security and teaching responsibility. Although, I do believe this and have a much better day when our day at home is mapped out and the kids know what activities we are doing and when. The kids are definately happier. They are also more responsive in the pack up of activities and much more willing to do the activities they don't like because they know what other fun stuff we are going to do in the day.
I am a firm believer that the routine is so much more beneficial for mums (or caregivers)! The days that I have planned I achieve so much, the kids watch TV while I vaccum the house, I do some laundry while they have room time (play by themselves in their room) and then the rest of the day is centred around doing craft, bike riding, cooking and fun stuff with them. The pressures of the house are done and there is time to be a focussed mum! Also, then when rest time comes around the time is mine. I have done the tasks to keep the house clean and tidy and then that precious nap time can be used for my relaxation!
Even though the Routine Charts of Little Billies are very appealing to kids. They are so much more important for mums. The provide the visual cue for what is next and they also help mum to structure her day to be happy, achiever and doting mum all in one!
